"If the state does not take additional action soon, there will not be enough qualified candidates to replace teachers leaving the profession," said Mark Weber, author of the report and a public school teacher."And the most dire shortages of teachers continue to be in math, science and special education, as well as substitute teachers," the report says."The State Board of Education adopted rules last week to implement a new law designed to grow the number of teachers in New Jersey. For a five-year pilot period, teachers applying for certification do not have to meet certain criteria. The law waives either a minimum GPA requirement or a minimum test score requirement and issues prospective teachers Limited Certificates of Eligibility and Limited Certificates of Eligibility with Advanced Standing."
